Umbilical Cord Derived products (UCDP)
How it works
UCDP also known as Wharton’s Jelly is a scaffolding tissue found within the human umbilical cord. It adds rigidity to the umbilical cord and protects the one vein and two arteries that transfer nutrients and life-giving substances between the mother and fetus. Wharton’s jelly contains stem cells and many extra cellular structures and growth factors.
UCDP contains Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC). MSCs are potent regenerative cells that are able to transform into different types of cells, such as bone, cartilage, adipose, and muscle cells. UCDP also contains other extra cellular elements.
Our unique preparation
Dr. McClish reviewed more than 100 medical articles exploring the use of Wharton’s jelly and safety in the use of this tissue. The articles generally showed that Wharton’s jelly use caused no untoward immunological responses, did not induce tumors, and showed a decrease in inflammation.
We often combine the treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance the result.
All Wharton’s jelly that is used is obtained in a sterile fashion and is derived from voluntary umbilical cord donation post live cesarean birth. We use a company that is rigorous about sterility acquisition and sterility testing of the product.
We offer different levels of UCDP, with each level containing different amounts of cellular elements.
a note of caution
We only use Wharton’s jelly for local orthopedic tissue injections.
We will not inject Wharton’s jelly intravenously. Although the literature reports IV injections given that do not cause untoward results, Dr. McClish is of the opinion that this method of delivery is experimental and potentially dangerous until proper studies can be accomplished showing the safety of this method of delivery. Until such time, Sierra Stem Cell Institute will only inject tissues locally wherein the injection can be contained. A joint injection or a tendon injection are examples of such contained injections.
